Maqueta 1457: Edificio Villanueva, serie Ourense - Villanueva Building Paper Model, Ourense series

Volvemos a las maquetas de papel que reproducen la arquitectura urbana de Ourense con este edificio de finales del siglo XIX, una nueva pieza para las poblaciones de vuestras escenografías para trenes o juegos de guerra.

En el año 1881 se inicia la construcción de este edificio de estilo modernista en la calle Progreso, en Ourense. Su propietario era Don francisco Villanueva Lombardero, quien fue Alcalde de la ciudad en la década de 1920, además de fundador de la Unión Orensana de Derechas en 1933 y Cónsul de Costa Rica en Orense; lo usó como residencia y para establecer en los bajos del inmueble un próspero negocio de ferretería, llamada “Ferreteria Villanueva “, por ello  se le conoce como “Edificio Villanueva“. 

Aunque es claramente modernista, no podríamos decir que tenga un estilo totalmente definido, ya que  resuelve  muchos  detalles  de manera  ecléctica. Usa sillares de granito  de muy buena labra, como podemos ver en el detalle de las barandillas de piedra en la parte superior del edificio, o en las labras de las cornisas y las pilastras. Destacan  sus motivos florales labrados en granito en la parte de las cornisas de las ventanas.

Su arquitecto fue Don Antonio Lopez Crespo. El edificio sufrió varias reformas a lo largo del tiempo, en una de las cuales intervino Don Jose Antonio Queralt Rauret que, en aquel momento, era el arquitecto municipal de Orense.

Lamentablemente,  tal como podemos ver en las fotos, el edificio no se encuentra en sus mejores  momentos: su fachada ennegrecida por la contaminación, la poco acertada instalación de toldos  y cables que afean su fachada,  las maderas  decorativas de las ventanas  sin tratar y un aire de descuido general hacen que el edificio casi  pase desapercibido.

A pesar de todo, no deja de ser una reseñable joya arquitectónica para nuestra pequeña ciudad. Esperamos que se pueda  recuperar lo mas pronto posible y no tener que ver un triste final para él, como el de otros edificios de mi ciudad.

La parte posterior de la edificación es totalmente imposible de fotografiar, pero mucho nos tememos que estará en igual o peor estado que la que podemos mostrar.

A nosotros nos encanta este edificio y tenemos pensado hacer un  par de variaciones de maquetas un poco mejoradas, pero siempre respetando el estilo y, para ello, reproduciendo con detalle el copete central.

We're back again to the paper models reproducing the urban architecture of Ourense with this building from the late nineteenth century, a new piece for your cities in your sceneries for model trains or war games. 

The construction of this modernist building on Progreso Street (Ourense, Spain) started in 1881. Its owner was Don francisco Lombardero Villanueva who was Mayor of the city in the 1920’s, founder of the Right Wing Orensana Union in 1933 and Consul of Costa Rica in Orense; he used the building as his residence and also for the establishment of a prosperous hardware business in the street floor, called "Hardware Villanueva“. That’s why it is called "Villanueva Building".

Although the building is clearly modernist, we could not say that it is an entirely distinct style, as many details were solved in an eclectic way. It has granite blocks of very good manufacture, as we can see in the detail of the stone railings on top of the building, or in the carved cornices and pilasters. Floral motifs carved on the stone cornices of the windows are noteworthy.

The architect was Don Antonio Lopez Crespo. The building underwent several renovations over time. One of them was carried out by Don Jose Antonio Queralt Rauret that was the municipal architect of Orense at the time.

Unfortunately, as we can see from the photos, the building is not in its best moment: the façade blackened by pollution, the unwise installation of awnings and cables that disfigure the façade, decorative wood windows unpreserved and a general careless appearance make the building almost go unnoticed.

In spite of all, it is still a remarkable architectural jewel for our little town. We hope that the building can be recovered as soon as possible, so we do not have to see the same sad end for it as for other buildings in my city.

It's completely impossible to photograph the back of the building, but we fear that its condition will be the same or worse.

We love this building and we plan to make a couple of variations of models slightly improved, but always respecting the style.
